May 2008 Section Meeting

Program: It’s May 2008. Do You Know What’s in Your Crankcase?

Ken Henderson, Vice President of Technology for Cannon Instruments, in State College, is our featured speaker. He is currently the Chairman of the ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum products and Lubricants. The committee is responsible for promoting knowledge of standard specifications, classifications, test methods, practices guides, and terminology on petroleum products and lubricants.

Oil has come a long way from API-SA. We are now at API-SM, and performance requirements for oil continue to be more demanding. We used to have only the American Petroleum Institute ratings. Pick up several different quarts of oil and read all its designations. Many products have S and C ratings on the same container. Some oils have an ILSAC or an ACEA rating. ILSAC is the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee, which is comprised of the Japan Automobile Manufactures Association, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and GM. This committee sets standards for the current GF-4 designation. (GF-5 is getting close.) While not on as many containers, ACEA stands for the European Automobile Manufactures Association, which represents thirteen European car, truck and bus manufacturers.
(GOOGLE tried to tell me it meant the Alabama Christian Education Association.)

If you care about your crankcase and want to know what’s in it, please attend and hear what this means from the chairman of ASTM’s Petroleum Products and Lubricants committee, Ken Henderson.

We are also pleased to have Chris Ciuca, SAE’s Program Developer for K-12 Educational Programs, who will give a short presentation on these programs. SAE and Bayer Corp. recently received the National Science Board’s 2008 Public Service Award for their work in this area.
