November 2008 Section Meeting

PROGRAM: SAE Student Night―Give Engineers a Brake!

While the title is a questionable pun, in designing a car or a component today, engineers have to give as much thought to cost they would to, “Will this damned thing work?” While the costs of design and manufacturing are usually the most important considerations, today's consumer has become more sophisticated and now focuses as much on the cost of operation, maintenance, and disposal as on the initial purchase cost. At this meeting we will focus on two important parts of brake maintenance:  rotor run-out and a method of achieving a superior result in rotor resurfacing.

In 1988, two partners acquired the rights to distribute an on-the-car brake lathe (PRO-CUT). They made a few design changes, and, by the end of 1989, General Motors and Sears were their customers. Since then, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Porsche, Toyota/Lexus, Ferrari, and others have approved the use of the PRO-CUT brake lathes on their cars.

We are pleased to have Jim Krack, District Representative, as our speaker. One of the subjects Jim will be speaking about is Ford’s September 15, 2008, evaluation of the PRO-CUT PFM 9.2 model.

Check out the menu and the prices. We are spending your dues.
